Can e-learning replace classroom learning?

Even before the pandemic, e-learning was gaining ground all over the world. Online learning emerged in the 1980s when different international institutes and universities started offering online courses for distance learning. Although, for several decades, students around the world took advantage of these opportunities through the Internet, compared to traditional learning, the diffusion and popularity of online learning was limited. However, that all changed with the pandemic. Global lockdown and social distancing have prompted the initiation of e-learning. But how effective is online learning compared to classroom learning? Can it be a perfect substitute for classroom learning? Let’s find out.

The best way to go about this is to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each of the platforms. Accordingly, this article will encompass several aspects.

Advantages and disadvantages of online learning

Before the pandemic, online learning was not very familiar and popular in Bangladesh. The situation caused by the pandemic has created a paradigm shift in the education system. Students at every level have seen their in-person classes moved to different online learning platforms. It took a lot of deliberation for each institute to jump on the bandwagon.

Speaking of the benefits, online learning has helped students of different skill levels stay engaged in their studies. Bangladesh was one of the countries with the longest vacations in educational institutions due to the pandemic. In this regard, e-learning has helped students to stay in the course cycle rather than completely detaching from it.

Online learning has a lot of advantages like –

– It provided a means of education even in the most unfavorable social state.

– The learning material does not need to be time-limited. Online learning materials are accessible from anywhere and anytime through the Internet.

– It is possible to revise the concept and content as the lectures and resources are stored on the net.

– Access to a larger pool of resources allows better motivation and a better self-learning process.

– It paved the way for access to non-degree foreign courses through international e-learning platforms like Udemy and Coursera.

– It reduces the logistical cost of operating a physical classroom.

Still, it’s not all fun, games, and flexibility when it comes to online learning, as there are some significant downsides as well. Let’s look at them from a local perspective –

– The capacity for face-to-face interaction is very less when it comes to e-learning.

– It is difficult for a teacher or instructor to personally interact with students in an online platform classroom.

– A large part of the population lives in a marginal economic state. As a result, internet and device access becomes another issue for low and lower middle income households.

– There is always the question of two-way communication in e-learning. The problems can be attributed to time constraints or to network issues plaguing everywhere.

– However, the most difficult aspect is directly related to the student. The ease of access to online learning tends to take students outside of the strict schedule of physical classrooms. Therefore, online learning also requires considerable personal motivation on the part of the student.

– During an online course, students can easily get distracted and get involved in other activities like playing games through additional internet tabs or listening to songs etc.

– Lack of social and peer interaction makes students non-social in the long run

– Unlike traditional classrooms, e-learning confines students to a designated room or space. They cannot take advantage of opportunities to play, chat, roam, etc. which slowly affects their physical health.

Advantages and disadvantages of traditional classroom learning

The traditional classroom has been the vehicle for imparting education since the concept’s inception. However, a closer look at the entire system reveals some key advantages as well as some shortcomings.

To talk about the benefits, here are some key points –

– The most convincing argument for classroom learning is the active learning process. There is direct peer-to-peer interaction as well as teacher-student interaction in classroom learning. This not only makes the process efficient, but also engaging.

– In graduate studies, not all courses or majors can be taught online. Majors like hospitality, nursing, and the performing arts require physical classes for hands-on experience and assessment.

– Nowadays, it is possible to find reference documents on the Internet. However, for specialized academic needs, a suitable library remains the option of choice. And in the context of Bangladesh, a proper university library is only accessible at the same time as physical classes.

– The rigorous schedule helps to induce discipline in the students. Physical classes have a specific routine for classes that insinuates expediency and orderly behavior among the students.

– The need for extracurricular activities is immense to develop fundamental values as well as to manifest new ones in a student. To this end, physical classes play an important role in facilitating the process.

Just like its good aspects, classroom learning also has some drawbacks like –

– One of the most important negative aspects of classroom learning is travel time and cost. It just adds to the extra costs and wasted time for students traveling remotely.

– Traditional classrooms may not be inclusive places for students with social difficulties.

E-Learning vs. Classroom Learning: Which Is Better?

It is important to consider the stage of the learner to better understand the impact of online and classroom learning. Each age group of learners has a different mental state and hence their perception of education also differs.

For a learning child, learning in the classroom is the best option. This is the stage in their life when they learn the discipline and become familiar with education as a whole. This age group cannot be subjected to an exclusive e-learning because it will not have the desired impact on them.

For a teenager, online learning may be an alternative to classroom learning, not a complete replacement. This is an age group where a student adapts to a changing perception both mentally and physically. As a result, learning in the classroom helps keep attention and discipline in check.

Finally, for mature graduation level learners, one of the two works well. It completely depends on their major. The mindset and dedication required can be expected given their age range. There are a good number of universities that offer distance degrees to students online through e-learning. Ultimately, it is about preference as well as the major constraints associated with it.

Final words

Whether online learning or traditional classroom learning is better, seems to be an endless debate. It is hardly possible to completely ignore one of the two. Rather than being seen as an alternative to each other, these two modes of learning should be seen as complements to each other. In this way, the education system will be able to make better use of resources and ensure an effective program for students.

GRA staff access IT training via E-learning

Mr. Augustin Sefa,

Mr. Augustine Sefa, Deputy Commissioner, Training and Development at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) said staff at the Authority will receive IT training from November 2022 through a learning platform in line.

Mr Sefa, who was speaking at the official launch of GRA’s IT training center in Tema, said that e-learning, which was a hallmark of the center, would enable all of its staff across the country to access the necessary computer training without having to travel to Accra with its financial burden and associated inconvenience.

He pointed out that the need for technology in fulfilling their mandate could not be overstated, hence their determination across government to provide the necessary state-of-the-art computer training center which has e-learning as a component.

The other components of the IT training center project include the physical structure, to be equipped with the necessary logistics, while the other component would cover operational issues such as the program and module, as well as a training management system. .

Giving some details on the IT project which is expected to be completed and operationalized in November 2022, Mr Sefa said that the KFW German Bank for Development is funding the project in two parts with a loan of 3.5 million euros and a subsidy of 1.5 million euros.

Mr Sefa said the project started with the signing of loan and contract agreements between the governments of Ghana and Germany.

GRA Commissioner General Rev. Ammishaddai Owusu Amoah, in a speech read on his behalf by Ms. Valerie Ennison, Deputy Commissioner, Transformation Office, noted that the digital strategy is fully aligned with feelings of access to transactional data, automation of highly standardized tax activities, communication with taxpayers and optimization of debt management processes.

Reverend Amoah said the process of digitizing and modernizing the tax administration must always be carried out taking into account its core strategic objective, which he believes is to increase levels of voluntary compliance by taxpayers.

According to him, this could be done by making the procedures easier for those who wish to comply while waging a radical fight against fraud.

He said the Authority was ready to deploy systems to improve the tax administration of electronic services in Ghana, such as web hosting, online shopping, among others, in addition to the rent tax system.

He said it was evident that GRA’s digital transformation would require a variety of specific skills ranging from programming, analysis, configuration and testing, and systems integration.

The IT training center, he said, would also provide the GRA with the talent pool to provide ongoing support to the Authority’s systems, including the implementation of the inevitable change requests that were often raised afterwards. the implementation of a system.

In the case of Covid, a suburban high school is brutally closed for two weeks and students return to e-learning.

A southern suburban high school will cancel face-to-face learning for the next two weeks after a student tests positive for Covid-19.

Parents of students on the Lich Township High School football team received an email at around 10 p.m. on Wednesday informing them of a positive case of Covid in a football program. The email asked players to take a test before class on Thursday morning.

Porsha Mazzarri said he was tested and saw the information when her son went to get the results.

“When he went to see his results, he noticed that his teammates’ results were positive,” she said. “My son warned me that someone tested positive and was walking around freely… I’m afraid for my child’s safety. I am scared.”

The mother of some teammates said students who tested positive in Thursday’s test were allowed to stay in school, but the district disagrees with that claim. The district said anyone who tested positive for WGN News was immediately removed.

“They say they’re following CDC guidelines. Where? How? ‘Or’ What? What about when classrooms, buses and cafeterias are crowded, ”Mazzarri said. “It can’t happen.”

The district emailed all families late Thursday evening announcing two or more positive tests. The district also closed the building to students for the next two weeks.

Families with students identified as being in close contact with those who tested positive received an additional letter.

Some of the letters to my family are:

This letter informs that two or more people from Rich Township High School have tested positive for COVID-19. We are working with the Cook County Department of Health to quickly identify and monitor people in close contact with people positive for COVID-19 and prevent further spread in schools and communities. A close contact is an unmasked person who has been within 3 feet of a COVID-positive individual for more than 15 minutes. The protocol having already been set up, we were able to identify the protocol in close contact with COVID-positive individuals.

Under the direction of the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), the Illinois State Board of Health (IDPH) and the local health department, the Rich Township High School District 227 will suspend face-to-face counseling and all activities starting Friday, October. Decided. October 1 to Thursday, October 14, 2021.

In preparation for distance education, Friday October 1, 2021 is considered an emergency school closure day. The district will conduct synchronous distance education during the quarantine period, which will take effect on Monday, October 4, 2021. We will resume full face-to-face teaching on Monday, October 18, 2021. We are aware that the quarantine must end on Friday, October 15 October 2021. However, due to the parent-teacher meeting, this day is a non-participation day for the students. Staff will be back on Friday October 15, 2021.

Parents told WGN News they weren’t happy that they didn’t have time to prepare to return to the remote.

“It’s very worrying,” said Monique Fen. “What does that look like? Where do they connect? Who do they go to if they have any questions?”

The district makes the following statement to the media:

Rich Township High School District 227 will be closed for 14 days for those who test positive for COVID-19. The district will host synchronous distance education during the 14-day quarantine period, which will take effect on Monday, October 4, 2021, and revert to full face-to-face education on Monday, October 18, 2021.
We have been notified of people who tested positive on September 29, 2021 according to the Covid-19 protocol. With the protocol already in place, we were able to quickly identify potential individuals. We will continue to work with the Cook County Department of Health to monitor others in close contact with people positive for COVID-19 and prevent further spread in schools and communities.
As per IPHD guidelines, all school buildings and district offices will be closed for thorough cleaning.

Accessible training expands talent pool, increases profits and values human dignity

Business learning has undergone major changes over time.

From apprenticeships centuries ago in Henry Ford’s “sociological department”, to the introduction of programmed logic for machine learning operations (PLATO) and computer-based learning in the 1960s, training of the next generation of workers has been refined to over $ 220 billion. industry that today uses mobile applications, games, social media and virtual reality.

As technology has evolved along with learning, tools have emerged to help people who may not fit the standard corporate mold to participate in in-company training. Assistive technologies such as text-to-speech, screen magnifiers, closed captions, and data tagging images provide alternatives for people with visual or hearing loss when on-screen lessons don’t work for them.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Section 508 was adopted and then updated by the US federal government, enshrining a set of guidelines that all government agencies and any organization working with federal grants are required by law to follow. Other countries have adopted similar legislation and a series of voluntary guidelines have been published by third-party organizations, including the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

Awareness of the accessibility of enterprise learning technologies continues to grow. Large companies like McDonald’s and Accenture have invested significant sums in accessible technology to improve the learning and development experience for all workers. Online learning authoring tools include various options to help employees create accessible content more easily. There is even a World Accessibility Awareness Day. This is great news for the billion people with disabilities around the world who may prevent them from fully participating in digital training programs.

But are we doing enough? Currently, only 1-2% of all websites fully meet accessibility guidelines. Many e-learning courses meet only minimum accessibility requirements, and sometimes organizations choose to give people with disabilities a separate learning experience. As an industry, we can do more to make workplace learning a fair experience for all.

Why is this important?

The declining population and the changing world of work are pushing the global workforce towards a historic talent shortage. As competition for workers increases, employers are turning to learning and development programs to help individuals upgrade and fill in the gaps.

Providing workers with learning and development opportunities improves job performance, increases loyalty and engagement, and increases profits. It is in everyone’s interest that these programs be usable by as many people as possible. The more accessible the learning content, the larger the talent pool will be.

It’s true that governments impose varying degrees of accessibility, but companies that prioritize accessible learning and push the boundaries of what’s possible will have a huge advantage over companies that just follow a checklist. .

Modern tools for modern workers

Section 508 was recently updated to adopt the WCAG Accessibility Guidelines, an initiative hailed by accessibility advocates as a step towards implementing content by more people with disabilities. The previous set of Section 508 technical standards, published in 2000, was obsolete. This left gaps in accessibility and did not reflect our current technology and the way we use the web today.

Today’s accessibility standards benefit all learners, even those without disabilities.

Accessible tools allow a worker sitting in a crowded public space to read captions instead of playing audio on their cell phone or helping non-native speakers internalize concepts by reading a transcript at a pace slower. Accessibility is about granting access to more people in more varied ways. Finding better solutions opens doors for those who do not publicly share their struggles.

Planning accessibility

Instructional designers, human resource managers and senior managers need to come together and decide that accessibility is an organizational priority. Standards will become more stringent and detailed over time, and failure to plan for accessibility now will only result in longer and more expensive fixes in the future.

WCAG rules were developed for websites. Following these guidelines is a good place to start, but online learning has its own set of tools and uses which, while similar to websites, are not the same. As an industry, we need to come together to find common standards, tools and processes that promote inclusiveness and accessibility.

For the individual instructional designer, start by educating your team about accessibility, focusing on solid instructional design and putting in place a set of tools, templates and processes to support the creation of learning. accessible up front, instead of adding it later as a supplement. function.

First, you need to understand what WCAG and other accessibility mandates are asking for.

If something doesn’t make sense, contact an accessibility mentor or advocacy group and discuss it. Understanding the reasons for accessibility can strongly influence the way accessible content is created. Better understanding will always lead to a better product.

Then focus on the learning goals. What type of behavior are you trying to guide and support?

Determine if a drag-and-drop interaction is the activity you need to stimulate knowledge transfer and retention. Often times you can create an alternative exercise that does not exclude learners but covers the content just as well. If your learning requires behaviors outside of accessibility, like simulated driving training, make them add-ons.

Building for accessibility early in the process instead of adding options at the end is the only way to create effective and accessible e-learning programs.

Despite the many advances made by accessible content in corporate learning, we still have a long way to go to make training programs truly accessible to everyone.

Organizations should start by using the best tools available to create accessible learning. Investing in better tools will pay off by saving development time and producing a better product. By putting accessibility at the forefront of training programs, by creating and using tools that enable everyone to engage with them, and by educating our employees on what each of them can do to help, organizations can expand and deepen their workforce to include a huge portion of the population that has so much to offer.

Accessibility isn’t just about adopting new software or checking boxes. It has to be a complete state of mind. Accessibility is an issue that affects the entire functioning of the global economy. We can do better. Education, better tools and corporate restructuring to give those who need access to accessible learning opportunities a place at the table when it comes to planning training programs are just the key. start of which can help reverse the trend.

As an industry, we should innovate in learning solutions that are accessible, engaging and rewarding. Think about the amazing technology we could invent if accessibility was considered first rather than last. It’s time for another major change in corporate learning, this time to create a more equitable world.

Beginner’s Guide to Online Learning Tools

Instead of going through an outdated training session that companies had grown accustomed to, better and more efficient e-learning technologies subsequently developed. Simply put, eLearning authoring tools are a kind of software that lets you create your own digital tutorial.

Authoring tools offer a variety of alternatives for creating dynamic and interactive learning content, such as text, images and animations, as well as quizzes and videos. Some apps provide a free eLearning authoring tool that is tailored to the needs and preferences of learners.

Features of e-learning tools

It is important to identify the features that your e-learning tool must have to achieve your learning goals. So here is the list of some basic features that any online learning tool should have.

There is no need to spend hundreds of dollars on eLearning authoring tool software when there are several fairly affordable options. An eLearning authoring tool is software that allows you to generate digital training content, convert it to eLearning format, and distribute it to learners through a learning management system or the Internet.

With just a few clicks, you can create amazing interactions that previously would have required programming expertise and hours of work. Obviously, price is a big factor to consider when choosing the best creative tools for you.

Micro-learning is similar to traditional online learning in that it includes learning in small increments. Micro-learning activities often include short-term lectures, projects or courses designed to provide the learner with ‘little’ pieces of information.

Microlearning courses are easier to create, update, and distribute than traditional eLearning courses, and completion rates are considerably higher – up to and over 90%, whereas traditional eLearning has completion rates as low as 15%.

Mobile learning

If an LMS is only compatible with mobile devices, it can provide a poor user experience and be difficult to use, distracting attention from learning. Mobile learning is capable of providing an engaging and interactive learning experience due to its bright and colorful displays and powerful processing capabilities.

A creative tool compatible with gamification should be a top priority. Real-world prizes and rewards are frequently used by trainers to motivate and involve trainees in the course. It is an effective method for influencing the behavior and attitudes of students towards learning. It increases motivation and commitment.

Template Archives

Any modern eLearning authoring tool should have a diverse set of templates to choose from. The LMS should have skillfully determined which models work best. This allows writers to choose and integrate quickly and easily into each particular course.

Different LMS for you to choose from

Managing an eLearning project can be a demanding process. Therefore, you need to know the tools that can help you lead, manage, and organize eLearning courses.

Here is a list of the best online learning tools that are currently dominating the market:

Absorb LMS

Absorb LMS is a cloud-based learning management system used by businesses of all sizes across a wide range of industries. While Absorb has a content library with hundreds of pre-designed online courses, you can also use their platform to develop your own tailor-made courses.

Articulate 360

You will have access to Content Library 360, a library of over 6 million course materials such as models, images, and videos, if you use the Articulate platform. Authoring tools that let you drag and drop objects, create interactive components and simulations, and optimize your content for each device.

Anyone from e-learning professionals to subject matter experts can use an e-learning authoring tool to distribute interactive material. Track results and work with multiple copywriters in real time, all from a single, simple interface. The drag-and-drop editor in Easygenerator makes generating interactive material a breeze.

You can also design your own course using eFront. The ability to build learning paths based on assessing skill gaps is one of the strengths of the platform, as are extensive internal communication capabilities such as email, calendars and forums. of discussing.

While e-learning has clearly grown in popularity during the epidemic, any investment in e-learning technology will benefit learners and educators long after the virus is gone.

Don’t worry if you are new to e-learning. I hope this tutorial helps you understand the ins and outs of online learning and discover technologies that can transform your education or training strategy.
