LG Display Replaces Hydrogen With Deuterium For Brighter OLED Displays

LG Display has announced the development of a new TV panel technology called OLED EX which is said to increase brightness by up to 30% compared to other OLED technologies for better picture quality on large screen TVs.

The company began mass-producing OLED TV screens in 2013 and has since recorded cumulative global sales of 20 million.

“Although the global TV market was down 12% this year, we still saw 70% growth in OLED sales,” said Dr. Oh Chang-ho of LG Display. “With our new OLED EX technology, we aim to deliver even more innovative and premium customer experiences through the evolution of our OLED technology, algorithms and designs. “

Each pixel in an OLED display panel emits light independently, without the need for a separate backlight, and the technology can already deliver vivid color and detail. The new technology is an acronym for “Evolution” and “eXperience” and would offer “perfect black, rich and precise color expression as well as extremely fast response time”.

LG Display’s OLED EX technology replaces the hydrogen elements used in organic light emitting diodes with deuterium, while a machine learning algorithm “precisely controls the screen’s energy input to more accurately express the details and colors of the video content being played “.

Details such as color accuracy, contrast, etc. were not shared, but we do know that the company was successful in swapping the hydrogen elements in OLEDs for deuterium – a stable isotope of hydrogen, which is extracted from water. Some machine learning algorithmic magic has also been used to control the amount of energy a screen uses “to more accurately express the details and colors of the video content being played.”

LG Display’s OLED EX technology not only helps improve brightness “to accurately deliver exquisite and lifelike details and colors without any distortion”, but also enabled the company to reduce the frame thickness of a 65 inch panel from 6mm to 4mm for more screen and less border.
