Online learning market – an area with huge potential for education platforms

In 2020, Romanians spending on education stood at $ 1.8 billion, and by the end of 2025 it will exceed $ 2.2 billion, according to a report released by PayU, the leader of online payments in Romania.

“The Next Frontier” is a global report by PayU, which analyzes the fastest growing e-commerce markets, including Romania. According to her, Romania is among the top 15 countries in the European Union in terms of education spending, and Romanians are showing that they want to invest more and more in their training.

What is digital education or E-learning?

E-commerce has grown at an accelerated pace due to the pandemic, which has helped industries operating in the digital environment to grow much faster than in a normal context.

Once the pandemic spread, people had to spend more time at home and find alternatives to activities they would have done in a normal setting. So, one of the industries that started to grow rapidly was the digital education or online learning industry.

Whether it be courses, online workshops, platforms or books, people have shown increased interest in all of this during the pandemic and joined this growing trend. If in 2019 the global e-learning market was estimated at 200 billion dollars, by the end of 2026 forecasts show that it will double1.

How did the Romanians adapt?

With the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, many activities that normally took place physically have been adapted to the online environment, and those related to education were among the first.

So, physical classrooms were replaced by online ones, and digital platforms were the ones that made this possible. Whether they were students, employees who needed training, or people who wanted to explore other areas of professional training, they all had to do these things online, and in addition to digital platforms, a role equally important was also playing electronic devices. We are talking about video cameras, laptops, tablets or even better phones, which have facilitated access to digital platforms.

The most used digital platforms in Romania for students are Moodle, Zoom and Google Classroom, the latter gathering over 41% of all users in Romania.

The main actions for which the platforms were used were information and the conduct of exercises and debates.

“Although investments in education are increasing and there is enormous potential in the local digital education (e-learning) market, digital education platforms and educational institutions are not yet implemented. in place to use, on a large scale, such learning platforms that can facilitate the learning process for students. If 2020 was more of a year of exploring and adapting to the online environment and the interactions we can have with digital platforms, however, we expect these things to become normal in the future, with more 50% of digital platform users say they haven’t. have no difficulty using them, and almost 30% say they need little help. What is the situation in the EEC?

At present, Central and Eastern Europe accounts for 11% of the total European digital education market, and the industry’s growth potential in this region is enormous when you look at other countries that have had a huge boost in that direction.

The report presented by PayU also analyzes two other markets in Central and Eastern Europe, which have significant increases in the digital education segment, these are Poland and the Czech Republic.

A similar situation to Romania is found in Poland, where during the pandemic consumers wanted to use their time at home constructively, and by the end of 2020 digital education had increased by 39% compared to the previous one. year, with the highest growth rate in the second quarter of 2020 (+ 124%).

The situation is similar to that in the Czech Republic, with data presented in “The Next Frontier” report showing that in the coming years the consumption of online courses will increase significantly due to the possibilities of remote connection and online payment. for courses and subscriptions for E-learning.
