Edward Austin Sheldon founded the Oswego Elementary Teacher Training School – the forerunner of SUNY Oswego – in 1861 with the aim of improving teaching and classroom performance. instruction and preparation.
Accreditation lasts for seven years, until autumn 2028 for the initial bachelor’s level and the advanced level, covering all bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education respectively. It confirms the effectiveness of more than two dozen diploma and certificate programs offered in the departments of vocational preparation and technical educator, counseling and psychology, programs and teaching, administration of Oswego’s education, health and wellness promotion and technology.
“Accreditation ensures that educational programs prepare new teachers to know their subjects, their students and have the clinical training that allows them to enter the classroom ready to teach effectively,” CAEP notes on its website.
The accreditation process provides a framework for continuous self-assessment and evidence-based analysis of its programs and operations. “These evidence-based changes, grounded in continuous improvement, help ensure that preparation programs are more likely to produce successful educators,” the CAEP website explained.
CAEP’s accreditation succeeds Oswego’s permanent accreditation with the National Teacher Education Accreditation Council until December 2021. Oswego was among the first six establishments in New York City to initially achieve NCATE accreditation in 2001.
