Better when personalized: The growth of educational technologies has led to better learning outcomes
By Nachiket Bhatia
Technology is transforming the workspace for all industries. When it comes to the education industry, the potential that technology can reap is still being uncovered. Today’s highly competitive environment and the urgency of time demand the revocation of old teaching techniques. These one-way delivery techniques were missing while catering to learners at different paces. Education is now being asked to foster and integrate creativity, collaborative learning and critical thinking, essentials of the 21st century. And technology will play a huge role in making that change possible.
Education technology has emerged as a solution to the unprecedented changes that have occurred in education during the pandemic. It has provided uninterrupted education during this period and now it looks forward to proliferating and advancing the levels of education. By introducing personalized learning, the edtech industry plans to foster skills through the incorporation of data insights to improve the basic skills of learners. Personalized learning is not a blueprint but rather a method of thinking about teaching and learning that has the potential to revolutionize classrooms and empower the future workforce. This planned shift from teacher-centered education to student-centered education will add a positive perspective to classroom instruction.
The K-12 segment has seen a significant increase in the use of ed-tech in recent years, but more needs to be bolstered by its implementation in higher education. Worth $85 billion in 2021, the global EdTech market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 15% between 2022-28. It is likely to be worth $230 billion by 2028. This period will observe a increased use of artificial intelligence and augmented reality technologies with game-based learning, hybrid models and application-based learning, which will drive investment in the industry. India’s ed-tech industry alone will grow at a CAGR of 39.77% between 2020 and 2025. The growing demand for non-academic courses from Tier II and III cities and the desire for customization in ed -tech are driving this expansion.
The advancement in educational technology has helped both instructors and students. Where teachers benefit from a more elaborate range of resources to deliver instruction, students at the same time have the advantage of learning at their own pace. Today’s technology has forced education to become more adaptable, inventive, engaging and collaborative.
Why Personalized Learning Equals Enhanced Learning
Personalized learning enables seamless integration of technology into learning experiences while engaging in real-world activities that support content learning. It connects the learner’s current collection of information, experiences and abilities with prior learning and crucial future knowledge by providing appropriate assistance. The engagement provided by personalized learning doesn’t tire the fastest learners, overwhelm slow learners, or leave inventive learners uninspired. Its benefits include:
- Freedom to decide on a learning approach suited to their learning abilities and retention rate. Ed-techs also offer self-assessment to determine one’s weaknesses and strengths for better learning.
- Helps explore new ways of learning through presentations and research while keeping learners more active and engaged.
- It improves dedication and motivation to learn. Intrinsic motivation encourages students and instills in them a sense of accomplishment.
- It’s easier and more efficient with better eventual results thanks to dynamic lesson plans for learners.
- It offers a better individual relationship between the educator and the learner. This type of relationship also improves the communication skills, the cognitive skills and, consequently, the academic performance of the learners.
- It paves the way for design thinking and project-based learning.
- In addition, working in a technological environment allows students to learn digital operations such as the use of collaboration software such as Google Slides.
- It prepares students for a career of their choice.
The rote learning model is gradually fading from the current education system. Innovative, tailored instructional designs and academic support strategies replace one-size-fits-all learning plans. At the same time, they also create fun, engaging and wholesome classroom atmospheres. These improved results, through technology combined with personalized learning, should propel the ed-tech business forward.
Differences in the pace of learning can never be accommodated by standardizing the time, manner and concept of learning. The standardization of education will eventually turn education into fertile ground for ever-increasing learning disparities. Students in the 21st century classroom bring their own experiences and perspectives on what has happened in classroom society and should not be viewed as passive recipients of knowledge.
Education technology will play a critical role in delivering tailored learning by helping educators create and deliver personalized learning experiences for each student. Tailored learning will cater for both underachieving and overachieving students. Putting students and their learning needs at the center of every educational initiative will eventually lead them to flourish later and help the world achieve equitable quality education with lifelong learning opportunities.
